Threadfall: Ongoing; intermittent and unlikely to freeze as the weather warms
Following a spectacular flight, Queen Minervath was caught by King Sulith and is now heavy with eggs. A new clutch is on the way, but will it be anything like her last or will this time bring joy and not sorrow?

Meanwhile, the Weyr continues to recover from the disastrous fallout of the first Threadfall of the Turn. Thread was successfully fought, but there were many injuries that brought the fighting strength of the Weyr down. A meeting has been called amongst the Weyr's leadership, Weyrlingmasters and Wingleaders to determine where the weaknesses lie.

In happier news, Senior Queen Kansk and Soldier-King Candesk have laid clutches, and as the eggs have hardened it has become clear that a joint hatching is to be expected.

[Month 7. Day 6. 2269]
Cuni looked down at Tiske from where she'd been sunning nearby while he bathed Tisth the lake. She rolled off the branch without warning and dropped into the lake, coming up with a fish in her teeth. She swam to the edge of the lake and jumped back out, blooding her kill before letting out a mighty bulge. She re-entered the lake, taking a second fish and moving up into the tree that she'd occupied previously, watching to see who answered her call. She was not a weak Mohark that would give in and just let whoever was fast enough take her.

No. Cuni wanted to know her competitors and she would test them. The winner would be her choice, not her default and they will have well earned it. She tossed the carcass of the second fish aside for her bondnet to finish off.

Tiske shook his head, diving into the deeper part of the lake to shake off effects of her mating run. Dive in to rinse off, Tisth. We are done for now. He told the hybrid.

[[for reference: Ohar and Zen, Shimmer is Shiarynri's, Blizzard is Nairo's.]]

Ohar perked up. A Precious was calling! Well, only one thing for that! Sure, he'd been enjoying sunning, but this was much more important. The Opal made his way to the lake, following the call- where was she? She couldn't have left, could she - ahhh, she was up a tree. Clever! Should he follow her? No, no, he couldn't show off if he did that, plus she might not like it if he got too close before she declared the start. So he would stay down here.

Of course, he'd also preen for her. Ohar twisted and turned, showing off his hide to best advantage and trilling at Cuni. Look, look! He was here for her, and wasn't he so handsome?

~~~
While not as enthusiastic as his run-mate, Zen was far from uninterested - he just didn't see the point of zipping around and preening. He'd do his best, and the Precious would choose him or she wouldn't, and that was just how it was. With that in mind, he followed Cuni's call, and ended up waiting patiently below her tree-perch. After he crooned at her in greeting and declaration of intention, of course - it would be rude not to.
~~~

Blizzard was also quick to answer the call - he was the best, after all, so he should be there so the Precious didn't have to settle for anyone less. He announced his arrival with a triumphant bugle - he was here! Everyone else could go home, now. This was as good as decided, he just needed to wait for it to happen.

~~~
Shimmer usually stayed by Shiarynri, but... well, his human always came first, but he did do things for himself, too. And that definitely included Chasing when a Precious called, even if he'd been sleeping. (One good thing about being on a wher-schedule - he got to sleep on nice sunny rocks all day.) It took him a couple minutes to fully shake off sleep, but soon enough he was bright-eyed and ready to go. And she wasn't far, even - good! He could make up for lost time. And he wasn't the only one here, but oh well, that just meant she had more choice! And even if that meant she didn't choose him, it meant she'd have a better chance of choosing a good strong father, so that was good.
The Opal chirped in greeting, then readied himself - who knew when she'd start? Best to be ready now rather than try to show off.
(If you did not get your male(s) in before this post you can play it as if they showed up on time if you want, or feel free to play them as late comers and see how that goes for them.)
Cuni's tail lashed as she watched her suitors gather. She showed no outward signs of what she thought of each individual. They were all beneath her until they proved otherwise and they would do well to remember it.
When she decided that sufficient time had passed for all interested to have made it to her, he launched herself off the branch without warning, jumping over the group of males to land behind them. She hit the ground running as fast as her feet would carry her. It was not just about speed though. She looked around. this terrain would never do. The trees planted in the Weyr's garden were hardly enough to make a worthy run. No.
But she had scouted. She knew where she wanted to go. She dove down into a crevice at full speed. The crevice itself was not the test. It was plenty wide for her chasers as long as they made the dive at the right moment. No the first real test of skill was at the end of the crevice.
The crevice ended in a sheer drop off. If one was not careful they would fall the remaining 10 or so feet to the bottom of the mesa. She dropped off the edge and found the the very thin ledge that was her foothold. A series of these ledges barely large enough to hold them was quickly navigated to take them the to the slope that would take them down to the open land that surrounds Plateau Weyr. It was as they ran over the open area that Cuni chose to take a glance back over her shoulder to see who was still there.
The Chief was perched on D'ny's shoulder in his usual spot when Cuni's call went out. He did not respond immediately, tilting his head as if in consideration while his bondmate continued doing whatever his bondmate did--his vantage point allowed him an excellent view but The Chief had other things on his mind. Like the source of the summons and whether he really wanted to give up the comfort and familiarity of his spot. He lingered just a few seconds longer, giving enough time to arrive fashionably late as befitted a Semi-Precious (but not too late--wouldn't want to disrespect the caller, after all), then scampered off to D'ny's startled bellow.
He arrived just in time for Cuni to launch herself off of the branch of her tree, landing somewhere behind the pack of gathered males, and The Chief hummed his surprise even as he whirled around to track her. She was already off and running and he wasted no time following suit.
The Chief darted after her, momentarily taken aback as she disappeared into the crevice, but not for long. He sprang after her, unaware of the drop-off that waited below, too focused on keeping his pace steady. When he reached the bottom he let out a startled noise, just barely avoiding plunging the last drop, claws skittering across the ledge as he steadied himself.
He lost a precious second before he could establish himself on the narrow ledge, but Cuni shone bright ahead and he was determined not to lose sight of her. He did not want to humiliate himself further in her eyes. Such a creature deserved the best
Ohar followed Cuni with single-minded purpose - she was running, so he was chasing, and definitely doing his best for her! Diving into a crevice wasn't the trickiest first challenge, but maybe she was just trying to weed out the obviously really unsuited ones first. And it was her run, so it was her obstacles to set anyways. Even if this was really easy, he could already see daylight at the other end...
The Opal ran out of the crevice, and suddenly found himself standing on air; luckily, he had just the thing to fix that, and automatically set up an air-pane to bounce off of and land back on the proper path down. Tricky, tricky, much trickier than he'd thought... he'd have to pay attention.
~~~

Zen didn't charge forward like some - he didn't need to be at the front when the middle of the pack would do just as well for now. Slow and steady won the race.

Slow and steady also got the opportunity to see other challengers fling themselves off a ledge by accident, so when he reached the end of the crevice, Zen calmly took a moment to find where the non-falling path down was, then took it. Simple enough, if you kept your head. Now to follow Cuni to the next challenge...

~~~
Blizzard charged forward after the Precious. She'd started? It was time, then! A crevice? Hah, easy! He bounded through, eager to catch up to her, and had a vague feeling that something might not be quite right before he found himself flying through the air, having launched himself straight off the ledge.
His landing was, if not necessarily graceful, at least good enough that only his pride was injured, and he quickly made a show of pretending that he'd meant to do that all along. See how good at leaping he was! Wasn't he great? And now that he'd crashed shown that off, he could continue the chase.
~~~

Shimmer, much like Zen, kept to the middle of the pack - though in his case, it was less not feeling any need to get zippy right off and more wanting to use the hotshots to find out where any particularly tricky hazards were. Avoiding getting hurt was more important than charging off in hopes of impressing Cuni.

With that in mind, he was easily able to find the proper ledge and take it - no falling for him, today. Sure, he'd probably be fine, but better safe than sorry. And hopefully he'd get points for being clever enough to find the same route Cuni had used.

While several of those that thought they were leading the pack had fallen at the first trap, some of those either too dazed or too injured to go on, most of those who had stayed towards the middle and back, weather intentional or not, had manage to navigate the ledge. The run was far from over.

She led them straight into the mountains. It was very clear that she was familiar with this route. She entered a series of small tunnels. They branched in every direction but she never faltered as she chose the branches she wanted to to follow. The tunnels grew more narrow until she had to squirm her way through them rather than moving at a full out run. Any who tried to just muscle their way through would find themselves stuck. The tunnels ended in a short drop onto a tree. She had found the nearest valley full of trees. She caught her branch, but knew that some of the the less skilled would have trouble.

Having a good lead on the her pursuers, she climbed up to a higher branch, jumped to the next tree and then another before finally turning to watch how the males had fared. This was her playground. This was where the real test began.

So far, The Chief was undeterred. If anything, Cuni's clear planning only intrigued him more. She was cunning, this one, and although one could not say that he thought poorly of himself, he could respect that cunning enough to be aware that he would not be able to surpass it. He might, however, be able to keep up through sheer determination if he tried, but he would not be able to outsmart her, especially not at her own game. It would take something else to prove himself worthy of Cuni's choice.

Focused, intent on the bright gleam of red ahead, he ran. He followed her into the mountains, into the tunnels, without hesitation, unwavering but steady. He did not realize at first that the tunnels were anrrowing until he found them scraping against his shoulders as he darted after her and for a moment he froze, fearing that she would get too far ahead and he would lose her in the branching maze. The distance between them lengthened but sense kicked back in--perhaps a moment too late--and The Chief forced himself onwards until at last they were free.

He tumbled out into the tree, flailing to catch himself. He dropped one branch, catching across his midsection and sprawled there for a moment to regain his breath before he managed to claw himself back up. The Chief scrabbled up, seeing a glimpse of red ahead (farther than he would like) but still visible--he sprang after her, trusting that he would catch himself this time. No space for too much thought, only the chase.

Cuni watched as the first few of her chasers went from tunnels to trees, a playful trilling sound leaving her throat as a few fell farther than they clearly intended. When the first made their jump to the second tree and was getting close to making it to her tree it was time to move again. Out of nowhere a flock of wherries burst from the tree she was sitting in, shielding her from the view of the males.

While the bird were between them, Cuni slipped down the large tree and into a hole that would come out at its base. When the birds cleared she would already be somewhere near the middle of the next tree and moving onto another's central branches. The gaps between trees were getting wider as she went so that any males who had managed to spot her would have a bigger challenge catching up. Finally she came to a set with a gap to large bridge.

She wasn't deterred. She leaped right off the branch landed with practiced ease on her feet. There she darted between the trees, looking for her next target. There was a large canyon ahead. Nothing that would kill anyone, but anyone who failed the jump over would be done with the run. Without hesitation, she jumped and disappeared into trees on the other side.

She was losing stamina quickly now as they dodged through trees and jumped over obstacles that got in the way. She would have to choose soon.

Cuni spiraled up one tree and leaped into another before scaling back down to the ground and taking off at a flat run through a more open area. The males were too close now. One of the wild moharks decided to attempt to force her hand. When he attempted to catch her, her claws found their mark in his eye. He spun off with a pained screech.

Good. However, that proved that she needed end this now if she was going to choose on her. She made tight a u-turn around the base of a tree, climbing up in it to perform a similar maneuver to the one that started this run. Leaping over the group of remaining males allowed her to observe those remaining. She darted back up the center of the group, scratching and biting any that attempted to catch her without consent. Finally, made clear that she had selected The Chief. He would have the honor siring her clutch.
