|Kitchens and Dining Cavern
These two areas are really in one truly gigantic cavern, one of the closest to the outer wall of the mesa. Indeed, on the far side of the Dining Hall, the wall actually opens up; from afar it appears to be a simple hole in the cliffside leading into a cave of indeterminate size. This allows dragons to land just long enough to drop off their riders before proceeding to their own weyr ledge or wherever else the dragon cares to go. Humans without a dragon to drop them off can access the Dining Cavern on foot by taking any one of several small tunnels which branch off the various main routes through the inner passageways of the Weyr's mesa. Like all Weyrs, there are scheduled mealtimes, but certain basic fare (such as klah, wine, bread, and some sort of meat stew) is always available any time of day or night. The big hearths are on the opposite side of the huge cavern from the dragon-opening, with the serving areas arrayed to one side. There is a raised dais in front of the biggest hearth, on which is placed a long trestle table with a stone inlaid surface. This is where Queen- and Kingriders sit, as well as Wingleaders whose dragons are of lesser caste, plus high-ranking guests such as Lord Holders or MasterCrafters. In front of the dais on the lower level is a longer, simpler table reserved for Officer riders and Wingseconds of any caste, while six huge, long picnic bench-style tables suffice for the rest of the Weyr's riders and Weyrfolk.

Other than the Dining Cavern, the Infirmary is the only other area in the Lower Caverns which is close enough to the outer wall of the mesa for it to have an external access point for dragons. This is, of course, necessary for draconic patients to be able to access the Infirmary. Humans can either ride a dragon to the Landing Ledge, or take any one of several tunnel-paths, depending on where he or she is starting in the Weyr. Someone starting in the Dining Cavern, for example, would take a different route to get here than someone starting in the Hatching Grounds. This is a very large cavern, spacious enough to treat 10 Queen-sized dragons at the same time for the long term; there are many smaller caverns linked to the main Infirmary 'room', and most of these are converted into temporary weyrs for riders with dragons too severely injured to return to their own weyr to recuperate, complete with full-sized dragon couches and beds and other weyr furniture for the riders. The other smaller offshoot caves are used as offices and individual examination-and-treatment rooms by the Healers. The Weyr's MasterHealer's office is in one of these offshoot caves. The Weyr's medical supply cavern is here as well, though it is kept under lock and key to prevent pilfering of the supplies. Only Healers of Journeyman rank and above have a key to the Infirmary stillroom.

These are just off the Kitchens and where the drudges sleep and stay out of the way of the riders. These quarters are warmed naturally just like the Hatching Sands.
