Threadfall: Ongoing; intermittent and unlikely to freeze as the weather warms
Following a spectacular flight, Queen Minervath was caught by King Sulith and is now heavy with eggs. A new clutch is on the way, but will it be anything like her last or will this time bring joy and not sorrow?

Meanwhile, the Weyr continues to recover from the disastrous fallout of the first Threadfall of the Turn. Thread was successfully fought, but there were many injuries that brought the fighting strength of the Weyr down. A meeting has been called amongst the Weyr's leadership, Weyrlingmasters and Wingleaders to determine where the weaknesses lie.

In happier news, Senior Queen Kansk and Soldier-King Candesk have laid clutches, and as the eggs have hardened it has become clear that a joint hatching is to be expected.

Things You Should Know:
-This is going to be a short run; 2-3 posting rounds max.
-Whoever wins this run both sires Kansk's clutch and becomes Senior King/Officer/etchandler, as Kanchu is Senior Wherhandler.
-NPC chasers are welcomed, but if one wins you must adopt them to play out the consequences. (You can still adopt them if they don't win, but there's no requirement.)
-I will be including posts for my own male whers as muse allows. I'm considering Shiarysk to have officially participated, given that it would be OOC for him not to, but he's not going to win because that wouldn't be as interesting.
-This run has a soundtrack! I will be providing musical accompaniment for each Kansk post. Chasers who participate in this will be showered in virtual cookies and tea, but I am in no way requiring anyone but myself to do this, nor does participation in the soundtrack affect a chaser's standing.

~~~
day 5 month 7 turn 2267, late evening // soundtrack: Night Falls ~ Evening Star (CYTOKINE)
Evening found Kanchu and his pair of whers patrolling the area around the base of the giant mesa that was Plateau Weyr - not even the Senior Wherhandler was exempt from patrol rotations, at least not under Kanchu's rules. He valued fairness and practicality, and refused to consider anyone - least of all himself - "above" any duty. Having a size or temperament unsuited for patrols was a reason for a wher not to be assigned them; holding rank, no matter how high, was not.
The fact that Kanchu would much rather be out on patrol than in his office doing the deskwork side of his duties didn't hurt, either.
As they passed a patch of low, dusty shrubs, Kansk stilled. Kanchu immediately gave her his full attention; she might have seen something important-
It is time, tonight. I will Run.
-or she could be Rising, that was also an option. Kansk rarely showed signs of being proddy, right up until the moment she Ran; it was a useful trait for continuing to work, but a terrible one for being able to plan ahead. This was going to wreak havoc on the patrols; thankfully Kansk was clever when in the heat of runs, and would know that her best option was to give those males still in the Weyr or otherwise on duty a chance to arrive, lest her choices be reduced to a wild male showing up or Husk having to chase from lack of anyone else (something the King had not yet had to do, and would be more than happy to continue not doing).
Chasers. I Run in half-a-candle-time. Come, gather, prepare. Be quick; will not wait for stragglers.
Those on duty who wish to Chase, contact your replacements. We will have no holes in the guard.
The message was out; now they would wait half a candlemark, and not a second longer.
~~~

soundtrack: 海神の城

Husk settled himself near Kanchu, taking a seat but remaining on guard - if trouble showed up, he would be on his feet and at its throat in seconds. His position in this Run was clear to him; he would guard his and Kansk's human, and make sure no harm came to him while Kansk was Running. This was no hardship whatsoever, as protecting Kanchu came naturally, and he had no desire to chase Kansk. Other Queens, yes; the Queen bonded to his human-hatchling, who was his student and something like his daughter, if not in the way humans reckoned the relationship? No. Not unless there was no other choice whatsoever.

~~~
soundtrack: Bearded dragon snoring
Kiask uncurled slightly and lifted his head; his schedule, already unusual for a wher, had been thrown out of whack by catching Candesk when she Ran. Other males might feel differently, but for Kiask, he had caught her and therefore he was her mate until she decided otherwise, and would show her the proper respect and attention. Currently this was resulting in a lot of naps at weird times, so as to spend time with both his handler and Candesk.
Kias didn't have to worry about having to get woken up by this, though. When Kiask had a mate, he was a one-wher King. So the Senior Queen Running, while interesting, was not something he felt any need to pay attention to until afterwards.
Kiask settled back down, wiggled to get comfortable in his pillow nest again, and quickly fell back asleep.
~~~

soundtrack: Crescent Night (Instrumental)

Shiarysk came to attention the moment Kansk's call went out. Luckily for him, he was already out on patrol, and would be able to be one of the first to arrive, and surely that would serve to impress. Others might take the time to blood a kill before arriving; he needed no such thing, and would win on his own (superior) merits.

...but he had to take care of one thing first. Duty and responsibility were important. And their replacement next shift was a handler with a pair of Knights, so there would be no having to wait as the replacement found replacements.

You-two. Come patrol so I can Chase.

Well. Two things.

Go inside, shut self in room like you do. I wait for replacement then chase.

Content that Shiarynri would do as told, the King continued his patrol pattern as his handler (predictably) made a beeline straight for her safe, barrable den. Luckily his patrol naturally took him closer to Kansk, and therefore the ten minutes it took for the next shift to show up didn't cause him any need to backtrack. He gave the Knights and their handler a perfunctory nod, then shot off towards the Queen.

He had a Run to get to, and he had no intention of being late.

Deira was settled in the Weyr, as Candesk's run had been nearby, and it seemed a good enough place to lay her eggs. Both handler and wher were resting at the time, perhaps with Kiask, though Deisk was nowhere to be seen--though that was not unusual. They paid him no mind, up until the point that his mindvoice screamed, for all the Weyr to hear. DEISK CHASE! DEISK WIN! KANSK FOR DEISK, SUPERIOR MATE!

As he let out the cry, he perched on a small outcropping of stone--barely five feet high, but large enough to make him feel majestic, before scurrying off on his tiny legs to go find Kansk. On the way, he nearly got trod on by a larger wher, to whom he disdainfully scolded. AWAY WITH YOU. LOSER. DEISK WALK HERE.

The wher merely ignored Deisk, as the little scout dashed onward, towards the outskirts of Plateau Weyr. He was there relatively soon, and once he arrived, he stretched his body out, so that Kansk could admire his superior, godly form. DEISK SUPERIOR CHOICE, STRONG AND SWIFT AND GOOD FOR EGGS.

Compliment her, dimglow, Candesk offered to him, having awoken to pay vague attention in amusement.

KANSK SUITABLE MATE FOR DEISK. SHOULD BE HONOR. ACCEPTABLE FOR OFFSPRING CREATION.

Flirting, am I right?

--

Kahtiss was taking a nap. A well-deserved nap, in his opinion, despite the fact that he was definitely slacking. He was sure he was supposed to be doing something...but whatever it was, it wasn't nearly as important as his nap. After all, he considered himself above some of the tasks he was assigned...though often, he'd end up doing them anyways. He stirred, as an insistent mental nudge interrupted his dream, before groaning and opening a single eye. Kahtisk stood before him, amusement and flightlust whirling in his eyes. Kansk runs. Get up and get ready.

Kahtiss was about to roll over--Kahtisk could chase all the greens he pleased, but Kahtiss wasn't giving up on his--

"Wait, Kansk?" He sat upright immediately. This could be his chance to seize more power for him and his king wher. He was already dressed--not that he would be dressed for long, he thought with a smirk--so he headed out of his room, handler and wher off to find the queen and her handler. Half a candle mark, hmm? Kahtisk would save his energy, taking a somewhat slow pace to the area, but quick enough that he wouldn't be last to arrive--not by a long shot.

Lovely Kansk, the king said with a rumble, I will chase. I will win. He glanced at his competition, not especially impressed.

Of course, Kahtisk was a wingless wher, but that wouldn't matter, he was certain. No, he was the obvious, superior choice, what with his strong, almost bulky body. Not the fastest--though not the slowest--he would be unlikely to lose steam as fast as smaller or less sturdy whers, and he knew he could last strong the whole run.

Despite the late hour and his recently healed leg, Karsk was up in an instant, tail wagging, eager to chase as he never had before. It seemed as though his 'war wound' had inspired some courage in the normally timid Wher. I come! Karsk cried as he rushed toward the Queen, practically stumbling over his own paws in his haste. Karazesk gave him a contemptuous snort and Karask cocked her head. Karsk chase? How come? She asked, baffled that her brother was chasing at all, let alone with such enthusiasm.

He is foolish, that is why. Karazesk replied with a roll of her eyes.

"Be nice..." Karaze said, but there was little bite to it. He was too busy trying to ignore the sensations he was feeling from Karsk. This was going to be tough...

I come! The Officer repeated. You are pretty, so I will chase! I will do my best! What the Officer lacked in courage he made up for enthusiasm, at least.

soundtrack: 幻想浄瑠璃 (37467524)

It was nearly time. Two more minutes, and the half-a-candle Kansk had declared would be over, and she would Run. Many suitors had shown up, which was pleasing, even though some were obviously unsuitable. Deisk, as amusing as Kansk found the Scout, was not even capable of siring eggs, even if he somehow managed to keep up with her, and the King called Drecisk was both a stranger and showing himself to be very aggressive, neither of which was winning him any points. Aggression was all well and good in its place, but that place was not in the wherleadership.

Which also meant that some of the more familiar whers were out, no matter how well they performed. Zarask was far too violent to be someone Kansk wanted to spend any serious amount of time with, though his bondnet-mate Zaransk was perfectly acceptable. Shiarysk was not someone Kansk wanted to reward with being her mate, though she might have considered him if she hadn't been Senior; Kahtisk was similar, though in his case it was less a fault in the wher than a fault in his handler. Kansk was not going to stick her Kanchu with a shirker to co-lead with.

Takinsk was a possibility. Kansk was a bit dubious about his handler, but if the King performed well, he had a chance. Yorikask and Risk would also be good choices, as would Karsk. In the end, she had a fair bit of choice, and it would come down to who impressed her the most.

It was time.

The Queen launched herself forward, streaking away into the scrublands. She would not make this easy for her suitors, and that included giving herself a head start.

Catch me - if can!

Kansk headed straight for a thick patch of brush, darting through the bushes in a controlled headlong rush. Once she was clear, she settled into a ground-eating lope, heading across a long flat towards a rock field.

Fifteen minutes later, the ground gave way from dirt to rock. Kansk had tested endurance and persistence; now she would test agility. The Queen hopped from rock to rock, sometimes taking to the ground and weaving around boulders, sometimes springing from flat stone surface to flat stone surface - and some that weren't so flat. After all, that was what claws were for.

A pile of rocks large enough to be a small hill loomed, and Kansk leaped, launching herself up and across its front to the peak, then back down the other side. She was almost out of the rocks now, and starting to tire, but she still had one last trick. One last test.

This was, after all, a place where cacti grew, even though it wasn't a true desert. And there was a patch of the prickly plants right here.

Kansk darted into the patch, heading straight through to the other side, weaving carefully through the cacti to avoid their thorns. Once she was clear, she headed for a boulder and hopped up on it, turning her attention back towards the barrier of foliage. She would see how well her suitors handled everything she'd put them through, and then she would make her choice.

~~~
[[Shiarysk not included because what is muse. Assume he barrelled through the bushes, did well on the endurance run, smacked into a few rocks (and may have had a bit of an argument with gravity when descending the rock pile), and was so fed up by the time he reached the cacti that he didn't even try to dodge and just crashed and thrashed his way through. Poor Shiarynri will be de-thorning his hide for days.]]
Deisk launched himself after the queen, but his little legs could only get him so far, even when he sprinted. He was soon left behind, and beginning to tire, but still, he kept on, determined. He would cause a miracle if he could! The whole time, however, he was shouting, both insults to the other whers, and to Kansk, words about her "suitability as a god's mate."
As he started to fall more and more behind, his calls became more desperate. WAIT FOR DEISK. DEISK IS MATE, NOT UGLIES. WAIT! WAIT!
When it became apparent that Kansk would not wait, he began to throw insults at her, too. UGLY QUEEN NOT WORTH DEISK TIME. UGLY, UGLY. UNFIT TO MATE. But still, he kept going...even though by this point, the queen was nowhere in sight, and he had no idea if he was going in the right direction (he wasn't).
--
Kahtisk followed the queen, launching into a run, claws scraping against the ground as he took off. He followed through the bushes, keeping up with the queen, though, the run had barely started, so he fell behind, just enough to let others underestimate him, and to save his strength for the final stretch, so he could sprint forwards and catch the queen. He only sped up towards the front when they arrived at the rocks. Speed and agility were, after all, his specialty, and he kept pride that he was able to be quite a bit faster than some other whers.
He handled the rocks with ease--precision was his specialty, each movement perfectly controlled, perfectly timed, as his ground maneuverability was quite strong. Even still, though he was fast, he began to tire, even before reaching the cacti--bursts of speed were his specialty, and while he could maintain them until he collapsed, he would not be able to run forever, and certainly not so at this speed. He dashed through the cacti, slowing to weave between them, before bursting out the other side, hardly battered, quick, but exhausted.
I chase! Will show can catch! Karsk decreed and rushed after the Queen, practically tumbling through the bushes in his haste to follow. As a result, he fell behind as he tripped over brush and his own pas, but he was hardly out of the race. Once clear of the brush, he loped after Kansk, eager to prove himself to her. He could hear Deisk's insults directed at him and the other chasers. Karazesk insulted him enough on a regular basis that the barbs did nothing to him, but when he began insulting Kansk, he became angry.
Kansk not ugly! Kansk lovely! You just slow! He chided the other Wher, but paid him no further mind. He'd passed the Scout ages ago, he was no threat to him in the Run. He had to focus or he wouldn't look good for Kansk!
There were rocks ahead, many of them. He had to decide how to tackle this; go through or on top? Jumping had never been his strong suit, but playing games of tag with Karask was. He decided to go through, weaving between the rocks, only jumping atop the rocks if there wasn't enough room for him to squeeze through. That was the easy part. The cacti slowed him, as he didn't trust himself to run quickly and not prick himself. Still, despite his caution, he took a few thorns for his trouble, but he refused to give up. He wasn't at the front of the pack, but he was keeping up. He was starting to tire, though. Karsk will follow forever! Won't give up!
[Note: this reply will include detailed mentions of only the chasers that posted in the last round, because otherwise I'd have to make up way too much.]
Soundtrack: Show Me Your Firetruck
Kansk watched, expecting to see the first chaser soon, and she wasn't disappointed - not only was the first arrival close on her heels, he had crashed through the cacti to get there that fast. That was - oh, she really shouldn't laugh, but for Shiarysk to let his anger control him like that? That was hilarious.
And so was Deisk's yelling. If the Scout had thought about it, he'd have known that he could never keep up, but realizing his weaknesses was not Deisk's strong point. He was amusing, though; it wasn't every Run that Kansk got to hear a temper tantrum, and it was a fun bonus.
More and more chasers appeared - Kahtisk had given a very good showing, precise and agile and weaving through the cacti with ease. A very good showing indeed, enough that maybe...
But then there was Karsk. He hadn't been the fastest, or the most skilled, nor was he unscathed, but he had shown remarkable determination, and was still game to follow even as the effort of the Run was obviously getting to him. And he'd even gone to the trouble of defending her to Deisk, which was sweet of him. She didn't care what Deisk thought, so it was unnecessary, but it was still sweet.
And when it came down to it, speed wasn't everything, and skill could be learned - but determination and an unfailing spirit were something to be appreciated. And that's what decided her.
Karsk, come! You are my choice!
